Damage, danger spur possible Oglethorpe ban on tractor-trailers
Oglethorpe County Commissioners are pushing forward a new law that would ban tractor-trailer trucks from some roads.
The ordinance - which was introduced at a board meeting Monday and will be finalized June 8 - would prohibit trucks with more than six wheels from traveling, parking or staying overnight on certain roads.
"We want to try to avoid premature damage (to roads)," said commission Chairman Billy Pittard. "The roads aren't really built for heavy trucks. They tend to be overloaded, a lot of them, when they come through these routes trying to avoid state highways."
Although existing signs already prohibit truckers from using certain roads for shortcuts, there was no law in place to support them, leaving local law enforcement powerless to stop drivers.
Trucks not only damage rural roads but pose a safety risk to passenger cars traveling on lanes too narrow for large trucks to share, Pittard said. Though the ordinance lists about 20 roads that have become dangerous because of truck traffic, Pittard singled out Arnoldsville Road as a troublesome.
"Traffic meeting a heavy truck is a dangerous situation," he said, especially for cars passing tractor-trailers on that particular road, which runs through Winterville.
The law also would ban most trucks from residential areas but would give clearance to those making deliveries. Vehicles not affected by the law include government-operated trucks, charter buses, recreational trucks and local agricultural trucks.
Any driver caught ignoring "No Thru Trucks" signs could face a fine up to $1,000 and as many as 60 days in jail, according to the ordinance.
